U.S. Energy Department Launches Genesis Mission Consortium to Advance Artificial Intelligence in Science and Energy
The U.S. Energy Department on Feb. 9 launched the Genesis Mission Consortium, a new public-private partnership aimed at accelerating the use of artificial intelligence to advance scientific discovery, strengthen national security, and reinforce U.S. leadership in energy and emerging technologies.
The initiative supports the department’s broader Genesis Mission and aligns with recent executive actions by President Donald Trump focused on removing barriers to U.S. leadership in AI. The consortium brings together the Energy Department, its national laboratories, private sector technology companies, and academic institutions to improve coordination from early research through deployment.
The department outlined that the consortium will operate as a central hub to identify high-value partnerships among members and external stakeholders. The structure is designed to strengthen coordinated responses to federal funding opportunities, promote department solicitations, execute partnership agreements, and track outcomes from supported projects. The consortium is intended to simplify engagement with industry and academic organizations by providing a single access point to participating capabilities and resources.
The consortium will establish member-driven working groups focused on AI tools, data integration and standards, advanced computing and cloud resources, and robotics and automation. These groups will support joint development efforts and practical applications across public and private participants.
The initiative also includes plans to host regular activities such as annual member meetings, focused workshops, and technology showcases to encourage collaboration and information sharing. Administration of the consortium will be managed by TechWerx, a partnership intermediary operated by RTI International, supporting coordination and execution across the effort.
