U.S. Energy Department Announces $237 Million Funding to Boost Domestic Transformer and Grid Equipment

The U.S. Energy Department on Oct. 30 announced a $237 million funding opportunity to strengthen domestic manufacturing of critical electric grid components and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The investment is expected to generate approximately $125 million in annual utility savings and retain an estimated $50 million each year in the U.S. economy by reducing spending on imported equipment and materials.

The initiative comes as rising electricity consumption increases the need for reliable grid infrastructure and a steady supply of essential equipment. Distribution and power transformers, in particular, are critical to delivering electricity to homes and businesses. DOE is seeking to address supply chain constraints by encouraging the refurbishment and reuse of existing equipment and promoting the adoption of alternative materials and components manufactured in the U.S.

Under the Grid Supply Chain Alternatives to Lead Energy Dominance funding opportunity, DOE will make up to $50 million available for projects focused on refurbishing and reusing existing grid equipment and materials. Another $187 million will support projects that increase the use of alternative materials and subcomponents sourced and manufactured domestically.

The funding opportunity marks the first initiative under DOE’s Grid Supply Chain Program, which is authorized to provide up to $375 million to strengthen domestic supply chains for distribution and power transformers, grid components and related materials. The broader program is intended to address manufacturing limitations and improve the availability of equipment required to expand and maintain the electricity network.

DOE plans to announce additional funding opportunities in 2027, with a focus on strengthening domestic supply chains for next-generation technologies, including solid-state transformers. Future initiatives will also encourage common equipment configurations to simplify manufacturing processes, streamline production and improve the scalability of domestic manufacturing.

Applicants must submit concept papers by Nov. 20, 2026, to qualify for the opportunity. Full applications are due Feb. 8, 2027.
