U.S. Energy Department Announces $50 Million for Tribal Energy Projects Across Indian Country
The U.S. Energy Department on March 25 announced a $50 million funding opportunity to support tribal-led energy development, with a focus on expanding access to affordable, reliable, and secure power across Indian Country. The funding will be directed toward both community-scale projects and early-stage planning for larger developments that can drive long-term economic growth.
The initiative prioritizes three areas: construction of community-scale energy systems to meet local needs, predevelopment work to move projects from concept to implementation, and planning and feasibility assessments for large-scale projects. These efforts are intended to help tribal communities reduce energy costs, improve resilience, and create revenue-generating opportunities.
The funding aligns with President Trump’s executive order on Unleashing American Energy, which emphasizes domestic energy production and economic development. The program underscores the role of energy infrastructure as a foundation for strengthening tribal economies and enhancing energy independence.
Eligible applicants include Indian tribes, Alaska Native corporations, tribal organizations, and tribal colleges, as well as partnerships among these groups. By supporting projects from early planning through development readiness, the department aims to build technical capacity and position tribal entities to attract additional investment.
The funding opportunity also complements the Tribal Energy Financing Program under the Office of Energy Dominance Financing. That program supports large-scale projects and has recently been updated through federal tax legislation to expand access to financing by removing certain federal restrictions.
Applications for the funding are due by July 24, 2026.
