U.S. Energy Department Awards $500 Million for Critical Minerals and Battery Projects
The U.S. Energy Department on Aug. 20 awarded $500 million to seven projects to expand domestic processing of critical minerals, battery manufacturing, and recycling capacity, advancing the Trump administration’s effort to strengthen U.S. supply chains for materials essential to energy production, manufacturing, and national security. The funding, announced through the Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation, supports commercial-scale facilities, demonstration projects, and upgrades to existing manufacturing sites that can increase domestic production while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
The awards mark the third round of the department’s battery materials processing and battery manufacturing and recycling initiatives, completing the selection process launched with a funding opportunity announced in March. The selected projects are intended to strengthen the domestic battery supply chain from raw material processing through end-of-life recycling, helping ensure more critical materials are processed, manufactured, and recovered within the U.S. Previous funding rounds sought to accelerate development of a domestic battery supply chain capable of supporting the rapid growth of electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage.
Critical minerals remain essential for a wide range of industries, including electricity generation, transportation, defense, and advanced manufacturing. While demand for battery materials continues to grow, much of the world’s processing capacity remains concentrated outside the U.S., making domestic investment a key component of broader efforts to secure long-term access to strategic resources.
The latest funding follows a series of DOE funding initiatives targeting critical minerals and materials supply chains. Recent efforts include $75 million for five projects recovering critical materials from coal and coal-based feedstocks, $134 million for two rare earth element recovery and refining projects, and $45.7 million for 19 projects developing technologies for critical minerals and materials processing.
