U.S. Energy Department Backs TVA’s $581 Million Grid Upgrade Across Eight States
The U.S. Energy Department on Oct. 13 announced plans to provide $250 million in federal funding for 84 transmission and distribution projects led by the Tennessee Valley Authority across eight states. The projects are expected to add approximately 2.5 gigawatts of grid capacity, improve reliability, and reduce outages. The total investment is estimated at $581 million, including $331 million in applicant cost-share funding, and is expected to benefit 2.58 million households and businesses while supporting approximately 800 jobs.
The funding falls under the Resilience Amplified: Multi-Market Grid Interconnection Initiative, part of DOE’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program. The initiative aims to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve the grid’s ability to withstand disruptions. The projects will expand transmission and distribution capabilities across TVA’s service region, supporting more reliable electricity delivery.
The announcement builds on a separate award to TVA under the Speed to Power through Accelerated Reconductoring and other Key Advanced Transmission Technology Upgrades program. Under this initiative, TVA plans to modernize approximately 125 miles of existing transmission lines across Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina. The work will use advanced conductors and grid management technologies to increase transmission capacity and reduce congestion.
The reconductoring project is valued at $159.7 million and is expected to add approximately 1,900 megawatts of transmission capacity. Combined, the two initiatives represent nearly $741 million in planned grid investment, including approximately $329.8 million in federal support, and are expected to deliver more than 4,300 megawatts of additional capacity.
The investments highlight federal efforts to modernize existing electricity infrastructure and improve grid resilience. DOE is prioritizing upgrades to existing transmission lines to expand grid capacity, ease congestion, and improve electricity delivery without relying solely on new transmission corridors.
