U.S. Energy Production Reached a Record High During 2024: EIA

U.S. total energy production surpassed 103 quadrillion British thermal units in 2024, up one percent from the previous record set last year, according to a June 9 report published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Solar, wind, biofuels, natural gas, natural gas plant liquids, crude oil each reached domestic production highs in 2024.

The largest source of U.S. domestic energy production during 2024 was natural gas, which accounted for around 38 percent of total energy production. U.S. dry natural gas production was around 38 trillion cubic feet during 2024, largely similar to volumes during 2023.

U.S. crude oil production was a record 13.2 million barrels per day (b/d) during 2024, up two percent compared to the previous record set during 2023. The majority of the production came from the Permian region, which accounted for 48 percent of total U.S. crude oil production during 2024. The region’s production made up for nearly all the growth during 2024, increasing by 370,000 b/d in comparison to the previous year to average 6.3 million b/d. Domestic crude oil production accounted for around 27 percent of total energy production during 2024.

U.S. coal production was at 512 million short tons during 2024, the lowest annual production since 1964. Coal accounted for around 10 percent of total energy production during 2024. Natural gas plant liquids production reached 4 trillion cubic feet last year, up seven percent from 2023, and accounted for around nine percent of total energy production 2024.

U.S. wind and solar production rose by eight percent and 25 percent respectively, due to new generators coming online. U.S. total biofuels production was a record 1.4 million b/d during 2024, up six percent from the previous record during 2023. These increases contributed to record total renewable energy production in the U.S.
