U.S. Fuel Economy Reaches a Record High: EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Dec. 21 released its 2023 Automotive Trends Report, which incorporates information on greenhouse gas emissions, manufacturer compliance, technology and new light duty vehicle fuel economy numbers. The report finds that for model year 2022 vehicle fuel economy hit a record high, while at the same time emission levels declined to record lows. Moreover, the report states that during the model year 2022 period, all 14 large manufacturers are adhering to the light duty greenhouse gas program obligations.

The key driver behind increased fuel economy has been the ability of manufacturers to innovate and enhance technologies in multiple vehicle categories. As a result, there has been a significant increase in miles per gallon (mpg) for vehicles.

The report finds that there have been record low carbon dioxide emissions and unprecedented highs for fuel economy. The yearly increase in new vehicle CO2 emissions and fuel economy has been the highest in nine years. Moreover, the report highlights that average fuel economy rose by 0.6 mpg from model year 2021 to 2022, double the yearly rate achieved over the last 10 years. CO2 emissions declined by 27 percent from model year 2004 to 2022, whilst fuel economy rose by 35 percent during the same period.

The report also highlights that most vehicle types at their most efficient fuel economy for model year 2022 and the average real-world emission rate for all new vehicles declined by three percent to the lowest level on record. Overall CO2 emissions declined by 22 grams per mile thanks to electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Moreover, these types of vehicles helped enhance fuel economy by 1.2 miles per gram.

Enhancements in fuel economy due to technological advancements implemented by manufactures have led to lower CO2 emissions, enhanced fuel economy and performance targets. The efficiencies in fuel economy are projected to continue over the coming years, in line with the U.S. emphasis and commitment to a cleaner transportation future.
