The New York Power Authority will install up to 200 direct current fast chargers at over two dozen locations along major traffic corridors, JFK Airport, and five major cities under the EVolve NY program, according to a Nov. 19 announcement. The agency said it has earmarked the first 32 locations to install charging equipment under the program which is a key pillar of the Charge NY 2.0 initiative which seeks to install 10,000 charging stations by 2021. The state has committed $250 million through 2025 for the EVolve NY program launched in June. The first fast chargers are expected to begin construction in spring 2019 along priority corridors with high traffic volumes from Buffalo to Montauk, and from Long Island to Canada. Among other efforts, the Public Service Commission has approved time-of-use rates that lower residential charging costs during off-peak hours. The state has approved more than 11,000 rebates to purchase electric cars under the Drive Clean Rebate program. New York sees electrified transportation as an important strategy to achieve the state’s goal of lowering emissions by 40 percent by 2030 from 1990 levels.
