NextEra Commissions Empire State Line to Deliver 3.7 Gigawatts of Renewable Energy to New York

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the commissioning of NextEra Energy Transmission LLC’s Empire State Transmission Line, a 20-mile transmission project that will upgrade the energy transmission system in the western part of the state. This initiative will enable the delivery of an additional 3,700 megawatts of renewable energy and is expected to avoid 7.4 million tons of carbon emissions and yield $950 million in lifetime customer savings. The project will not only increase transmission capacity, but will add renewable energy to the grid thereby supporting the Biden administration’s goal to promote clean energy.

The New York State Independent System Operator selected the project through a competitive solicitation process. NextEra Energy Transmission New York Inc will develop and operate the new transmission line, which will connect to the new Dysinger switchyard in Royalton New York with the new East Stolle switchyard in Elma New York. The company believes that the Empire State Line project is in line with the state’s nation-leading goals to decarbonize the grid and provide improved access to clean energy.

New York is required to achieve 70 percent electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and net zero carbon emission by 2040 by gradual decline of the state’s dependency on fossil fuels. This will embark on improved environmental outcomes by adopting more renewable sources and reducing carbon emission in the atmosphere. By commissioning this project, The government has shown its commitment to provide sufficient transmission capacity so that renewable energy can reach its full potential.
