FERC Entergy Nuclear Settlement

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will consider a complaint filed by Arkansas and Mississippi Public Service Commissions against System Energy Resources Inc., a subsidiary of Entergy Corp., alleging that its current return on equity is unjust. The petitioners seek to reduce the current equity cost level, under which the company sells the output of its share of the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant in Mississippi. (EL17-41)

NJ Senate Eversource Rate Change Hearing

The New Jersey Senate Environment and Energy Committee will vote on a nuclear subsidy bill, which would provide $350 million in subsidies to PSEG and Exelon nuclear plants over a decade. (S877)

VT PUC Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Update

The Vermont Public Utility Commission will report on the decommissioning of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. The Entergy Corp. plant was shutdown in 2014 and sold to NorthStar Group Services Inc. in 2016 for the purpose of the closure. (8880)

CT PURA Eversource Rate Change Hearing

The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority will consider Eversource subsidiary Connecticut Light and Power Company’s request to increase its electric rates by 6.79 percent for one year beginning May 2018 and smaller hikes in 2019 and 2020. (17-10-46)

MD PSC AltaGas, WGL Merger Hearing

The Maryland Public Service Commission will analyze the proposed $6.4 billion purchase of WGL Holdings Inc., the parent company of Washington Gas, by AltaGas Ltd. Under the agreement, Washington Gas will spend $70 million to extend its natural gas service areas and another $33 million for expansion of natural gas infrastructure into underserved parts of the state. The commission must sign off on the settlement agreement. (9449)

MS PSC Kemper Clean Coal Final Decision

The Mississippi Public Service Commission will vote on the settlement reached by Southern Co.’s subsidiary Mississippi Power Co. on its failed $7.5 billion Kemper County “clean coal” project. Southern pulled funding in June 2017 after Kemper went over budget. The regulator now wants to have the utility operate the plant on natural gas. (2017-AD-112)

The Maryland Public Service Commission will consider Competitive Power Ventures Inc.’s application for a capacity upgrade to its 725 megawatt St. Charles natural gas plant in south Maryland. (9437)

The Florida Public Service Commission will consider adjustments to customer rates in order to account for reduced tax obligations for utilities under the recently enacted federal tax cuts. (20180013)

MA DOER Northern Pass Assessment Deadline

Cutoff date set by Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources for Eversource Energy to determine the viability of its proposed Northern Pass transmission line after the New Hampshire siting committee rejected a construction permit, according to online media reports. Massachusetts had selected the project under its renewable energy procurement plan to cut its reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

WA UTC Avista, HydroOne Merger Settlement

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission will analyze Avista and Hydro One’s $5.3 billion merger approved by FERC on Jan. 16. The merger between the Canadian transmission and distribution service provider and Avista Corporation, an electricity and gas utility serving Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana, requires approvals from state regulators within Avista’s territory. MS PSC Empire District Customer Savings Hearing

The California Public Utilities Commission will examine the state’s fire threat and measures to mitigate the hazards posed to the electric grid, including federal standards and best practices. Every year the state is hit with over 5,400 wildland fires, burning an average of more than 156,000 acres, with some of the blazes caused by utility infrastructure. (EO-2018-0092)
