New Jersey Launches Largest 'Single-State' Solicitation For 1.1-Gigawatts of Offshore Wind Power

Interstate Power and Light Company anticipates that over the next decade it will have a surplus of renewable energy credits to the tune of between 1.5 million to 5.5 million per year, relative to Iowa’s current renewable energy requirements, according to a Jan. 31 filing by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

  • Interstate Power and Light is required to secure about 50 megawatts of nameplate renewable capacity under Iowa’s renewable portfolio standard, the Alternative Energy Production law.
  • Interstate Power’s renewable supply obligation equates to about 125,000 MWh per year, or 0.8 percent of Iowa annual retail energy sales.
  • “IPL has recently made a number of investments to transform its generation fleet”, including the construction of natural gas generators and the purchase of wind power to replace retiring coal capacity.
  • IPL’s projections on REC supply cited by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in a proceeding concerning the utility’s integrated resource plan.
  • NOTE: IPL serves about 490,000 electric customers and more than 220,000 natural gas customers in over 83 counties in Iowa.
