Michigan’s electric choice customers had about 1,970 megawatts of demand, as of December 2018, an increase of about 8 megawatts from the prior year, according to the Michigan Public Service Commission’s report on electric competition report released on Feb. 1.

  • Electricity consumption rose despite a decline in the number of customers to 5,819, from 5,929 in 2017, with most of the participants from commercial and industrial customers.
  • Around 6,654 customers were interested in the program if the cap on enrollment could accommodate more enrollees; the cap is set at 10 percent of a utility’s average retail sales from the previous year.
  • Throughout 2018, Consumers Energy Co., DTE Electric Co., Upper Peninsula Power Co., Upper Michigan Energy Resource Corp., and Cloverland Electric Cooperative were at their 10 percent cap.
  • Michigan is one of 20 jurisdictions with full or limited retail electric market restructuring in 2018.
