The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) hosted their Summer Policy Summit in San Diego, CA, July 17-20, 2022. The conference was NARUC’s first non-hybrid meeting since its February 2020 Winter Policy Summit.
“The Transforming Grid – Embracing Change While Preserving Reliability,” was the opening general session. This session included essential insights from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation assessments and industry experts to address the transition to clean energy.
NARUC President Judith Williams Jagdmann, of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, said about the summit: “I am so pleased that we were able to forgo the hybrid format and meet in person to discuss an array of important issues. I am particularly pleased to have moderated the Transforming Grid panel. We were fortunate to have an esteemed group of knowledgeable experts able to look at how the grid is changing and how we should navigate that change from different perspectives.”
A second general session, “Are We Ready for a Nuclear Reactor Renaissance?” was held on Wednesday. This session was moderated by Judith Williams Jagdmann, and described a carbon-free future.
An Exemplary American Leadership Award from the NARUC Commissioners Emeritus group was awarded to Immediate Past President Paul Kjellander on Tuesday, July 19.
The summit offered many special activities, including an interconnection workshop, a Black Sky workshop and a poverty simulation, in which participants learned about the challenges of poverty.
An electric school bus by Lion Electric offered rides to NARUC participants. Lion Electric seeks to instill important values in younger generations by educating them on the importance of protecting the environment by using clean and renewable energy.
