BOEM California Offshore Wind Planning

A renewable energy task force with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will discuss its leasing program for offshore wind projects. California has potential for over 100 gigawatts of offshore wind generating capacity, or about 1.5 times the state’s electric energy consumption, according to the agency. California cemented its leadership on renewables after passing legislation on Sept. 10 setting a target to source all of its electricity from renewable and zero-carbon-emitting resources by 2045.

FERC Monthly Commission Meeting

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will consider an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation to expedite applications for liquefied natural gas projects. The U.S. is poised to become one of the world’s leading suppliers of the super-chilled fuel with the start of several export facilities this year. International trade of LNG rose 10 percent to just over 38 billion cubic feet per day last year, posting the largest jump on record, as supplies from vast shale reserves in the U.S. reach international markets.

FL PSC Tax Cut Rate Investigation Meeting

The Florida Public Service Commission will discuss the tax impacts associated with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 for Florida Power & Light Company. The utility announced in January it wants to put the tax savings toward the $1.3 billion cost of repairing damage to the grid caused by Hurricane Irma in a move that would spare customers an average of about $250. The company also said that the tax law saw its revenue requirement for 2018 cut by $684.8 million. FPL is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Inc. (20180046-EI)

IL CC Electric Vehicle Policy Session

The Illinois Commerce Commission will examine the benefits and challenges of electric vehicles on the grid, covering impacts on power demand, lack of charging stations, and rate designs to improve accessibility. Widespread adoption of electric vehicles is expected to reap $43 billion in benefits to the state by 2050. Illinois ranks sixth in the nation for the number of registered electric vehicles.

NY PSC Electric Vehicle Charging Meeting

The New York Public Service Commission will review rate designs for electric vehicle charging stations. The agency is soliciting input on the role of utilities, including issues with utility ownership of charging infrastructure and barriers to treating electric vehicles as a source of distributed energy. Under the Cuomo administration’s $250-million Evolve NY initiative, the state looks to expand the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure, including the installation of 10,000 charging stations by 2021 under the Charge NY 2.0 program. CAISO Grid Connection Meeting

The California grid operator will discuss its draft final proposal to enhance the interconnection procedures and agreements with generators, covering such issues as ride-through requirements for inverter-based generation, network upgrades and the assignment of costs. CAISO wants to simplify the generator interconnection process to reflect changes in the industry and in customer needs. (Market Notice)

NV PUC Annual Consumer Session

The Nevada Public Utilities Commission will hold its annual session to take feedback from consumers on its regulated utilities including NV Energy Inc. and Southwest Gas Holdings Inc. In November, Nevadans will see two ballot questions related to electrical power. The “energy choice” initiative would open Nevada’s energy market to new power providers while the renewable portfolio standard initiative would expand the state’s renewable commitment to 50 percent by 2030, up from 25 percent by 2025. NV Energy is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

MO PSC Great Plains Rate Case Hearing

The Missouri Public Service Commission will review a request from Great Plains Energy Inc. subsidiaries Kansas City Power & Light Co. and KCPL-Greater Missouri Operations Co. for approval to boost annual electric revenues by $16.4 million and $19.3 million, respectively, reflecting fluctuations in fuel and power costs. The higher revenues would hike the average monthly bill by about $3 and $2. The companies said the rate update will pass on all the savings from the federal tax cuts. Together the companies serve about half a million customers in the state. (ER-2018-0145)

WA UTC Community Solar Deadline

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission is scheduled to receive comments on rules for community solar companies, covering licensing and registration, annual reporting, fees and consumer protection. The measures are being put in place following legislation passed last year that seeks to promote local renewable energy. (UE-171033)
