New Jersey Regulator Launches Multi-Unit Dwelling Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities on Jan. 26 announced the opening of the electric vehicle charger incentive program for multi-unit dwellings. This program is consistent  with the 2019 Energy Master Plan’s effort to electrify the transportation sector, which accounts for more than 40 percent of the state’s emissions and supports the goal of having chargers at 30 percent of multi-unit dwellings by the end of this decade. The agency has a budget of $14 million to finance electric vehicle charging infrastructure projects for FY22, and $1 million of that amount will be used to fund this incentive program.

Access to adequate charging infrastructure represents a fundamental factor for the exponential growth in the use of electric vehicles. In this sense, the agency is focussed on efforts to promote an equitable and reliable EV ecosystem infrastructure, as well as facilitating the adoption of an efficient framework for the implementation of different charging scenarios or service fleets.

The aid will be presented as grants as follows:

  • Rebates of $1,500 for the purchase of dual-port, networked Level-Two EV charging stations;
  • For the Make-Ready costs of Level-Two EV chargers a grant of 50 percent of the cost (up to an amount of $5,000).

Applications from overburdened municipalities are eligible for greater incentives as established by the Murphy administration and indicated in the Board’s Community Energy Planning Program. In this case, the following benefits are defined:

  • In the case of multi-unit dwellings located in overburdened municipalities, $2,000 will be awarded for the purchase of a Level-Two EV charging station;
  • For Make-Ready costs of Level-Two EV chargers in multi-unit dwellings located in overburdened municipalities, a grant of 75 percent of the cost (up to an amount of $7,500).

Eligible applicants classified as multi-unit dwellings are represented by: apartments, condominiums, or mixed residential locations with a minimum of five units and dedicated off-street parking. Applicants may require up to six Level-Two EV charging stations and it is not necessary to apply for all at once.

The planned deadline for receiving applications is until 5 p.m. May 2, 2022 or until funds are exhausted.
