Two U.S. Energy Department Critical Mineral Projects Added to Federal Permitting Dashboard

The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council on April 18 announced improved accountability and transparency for the federal permitting of two U.S. Energy Department critical minerals projects. The two projects added to the Permitting Dashboard are South West Arkansas Project and Michigan Potash.
The projects being added to the dashboard are on the back of U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order titled Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production. On March 20 President Trump issued the order instructing his administration to instantly implement measures increasing the production of U.S. critical minerals, including potash, gold, copper, uranium, among others as determined by the National Energy Dominance Council, with a focus on accelerating priority domestic mineral production projects, clarifying the Mining Act of 1872, recognizing land use for mineral projects, and fast-tracking private and public capital investment.
The Michigan Potash Project is expected to be the largest U.S.-based producer of high-quality potash fertilizer and food-grade salt, utilizing mechanical vapor recompression technology and geothermal heat extracted from subsurface brine. Following the completion of the project, the U.S. dependence on potash imports will decline and this will enhance food security across the nation. During January 2025, the department announced a conditional commitment for a loan guarantee of up to $1.26 billion to Michigan Potash.
The South West Arkansas Project supports the creation of a Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) facility in North America that will produce battery-grade lithium carbonate from lithium-rich brine. Following the completion, the project will assist in securing the domestic lithium supply chain.
The two projects reinforce the Trump Administration’s pledge to support domestic supply chains for critical materials and minerals and reduce reliance on foreign imports. Moreover, the additions to the dashboard are vital in taking forward President Trump’s agenda for U.S. energy domination through a more affordable, reliable, and secure U.S. energy network.
