U.S. and Saudi Arabia Unveil Agreement to Strengthen Energy Cooperation

The U.S. Energy Department Secretary Chris Wright on April 15 announced at a press conference in Riyadh that the U.S. and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding at a future date to advance cooperation between the nations across vital areas of the energy supply chain and boost both energy innovation and scientific research.

The non-binding agreement between the nations provides a guideline for cooperation in both emerging and traditional energy sectors. Moreover, the agreement reinforces shared strategic prioritization, in the absence of legal and financial commitments.

The two countries will cooperate across multiple areas to develop energy resources and infrastructure both in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. These include mining, civilian nuclear technology, and energy production. Further details on specific energy related collaboration projects are expected to be announced at a later date. In his remarks, Secretary Wright drew attention to U.S. President Donald Trump’s larger agenda to remove barriers, so that the U.S. and its allies can become stronger.
