U.S. Energy Department Launches Genesis Mission to Accelerate Artificial Intelligence in Energy and National Security
President Donald Trump on Nov. 24 issued an executive order to establish the Genesis Mission, a national effort led by the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate artificial intelligence across U.S. science and energy innovation. The action advances the administration’s push to strengthen domestic innovation and reduce dependence on foreign competitors.
The mission will mobilize the department’s 17 national laboratories, industry partners, and universities to build an integrated discovery platform. The platform will link leading supercomputers, AI tools, emerging quantum systems, and advanced research instruments. The agency described the effort as the most complex research platform ever assembled. The platform will draw on the expertise of about 40,000 scientists and engineers across the national laboratory network.
The Genesis Mission focuses on three national priorities. The first is American energy dominance. The initiative aims to speed progress in advanced nuclear technologies, fusion research, and modern grid systems through AI and advanced computing. The second priority is discovery science. The mission supports the growth of the nation’s quantum ecosystem, which the administration views as central to future industries. The third priority is national security. DOE is directed to develop AI systems for nuclear stockpile stewardship and to accelerate the creation of defense-ready materials.
The mission builds on an earlier executive order that sought to remove barriers to U.S. leadership in AI. It also advances America’s AI Action Plan introduced earlier this year to expand domestic capabilities in high-performance computing, strengthen supply chains, and support long-term competitiveness.
The administration expects the Genesis Mission to significantly increase scientific output over the next decade. The integrated platform is intended to give researchers new tools to process large datasets, identify new materials, and improve complex energy systems. Through this initiative, the federal government aims to secure continued leadership in energy technology, scientific discovery, and national security innovation.
