U.S. Interior Disburses $21.5 Billion in Fiscal Year 2022 Energy Revenue
The U.S. Interior Department has announced the second-highest disbursement, amounting to $21.53 billion, in energy revenues in fiscal year 2022. The disbursement includes the largest revenue from renewable energy initiatives on federal lands and waters including a record $4.37 billion from the New York Bight offshore wind lease sale.
Since 1983, the above payout is the second largest, offering funds to federal states to achieve their goals, including hydropower projects and irrigations, public lands protection, water body protection, and historic preservation initiatives.
The department’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue collected energy revenue from renewables, oil and gas, and mining activities on federal onshore and offshore lands, and disbursed $4.36 billion to 33 states. The following graph indicates the disbursements by states in fiscal year 2022.
New Mexico and Wyoming both received more than 80 percent in revenues generated in fiscal year 2022 from energy production and mining activities. In addition to New Mexico (63.3 percent) and Wyoming (18.1 percent), other states getting the funds based on the energy production and mining activities are North Dakota, 3.8 percent; Colorado, 3.3 percent; Louisiana, 2.7 percent; Utah, 2.1 percent; Texas, 1.8 percent; California, 1.3 percent; Alaska, 1 percent; Alabama, 0.9 percent; Mississippi, 0.9 percent; and Montana, 0.8 percent.
All the revenue received from energy and mineral production on tribal lands were disbursed to 33 federally recognized tribes and about 31,000 individual Indian mineral owners. Since 1982, the agency has disbursed over $353.1 billion in mineral leasing revenues. Most of them are done monthly from the royalties, rents and bonuses collected from companies operating on federal lands and waters.
