BOEM California Offshore Wind Lease Sale
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is due to receive comments on its proposed competitive lease sale for offshore wind development in the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area and the Humboldt Wind Energy Area, offshore Central and Northern California, respectively. The Morro Bay area contains about 376 square miles that could support 3 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, and the Humboldt Wind Energy Area contains approximately 206-square-miles that could generate up to 1.6 gigawatts of renewable energy. Wind development in the areas would contribute to both California’s goal of 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2045 and the Biden administration’s goal of developing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.
