Portland General Electric Company and NextEra Energy Resources LLC have announced plans to build a 300-megawatt wind farm combined with 50 megawatts of solar and 30 megawatts of battery storage, making it the largest project of this kind in the nation, according to a Feb. 13 press release.
- The new project called the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility will be located in Oregon and bring PGE’s wind generation portfolio to a total of 1 gigawatt, allowing it to supply about 50 percent of its customers with emission-free power.
- The solar farm will be one of the largest in the state, while the storage facility will be the largest in Oregon and one of the biggest in the United States.
- PGE will invest about $160 million and own 100 megawatts of the wind project while a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources will own the balance of the project and sell its output to PGE under 30-year power purchase agreements. NextEra Energy Resources’ subsidiary will build and operate the facility.
- The wind farm is set to become operational by December 2020, qualifying for the federal production tax credit.
- NextEra Energy Resources is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Inc.
