The Michigan Public Service Commission on Jan. 18 approved DTE Electric Co.’s voluntary green pricing program tailored for large customers who choose to meet a portion of their electricity needs from renewable energy resources. The company said that the program will commence once the renewable energy projects required to support the program are in commercial operation in late 2020, but customers can start enrolling in the pilot. Costs will be established when the projects come online. The program stems from legislation enacted in 2016 that requires all the state’s electric utilities to provide customers the opportunity to buy renewable power.
- Under the pilot program, commercial and industrial customers can increase the portion of their electric usage attributable to renewable resources in 5 percent increments.
- Participating customers must commit to contract terms of 5, 10, or 20 years and pay a per kWh subscription fee
- The program supplements the utility’s MIGreenPower pilot designed for residential and small business customers.
- DTE Electric is a subsidiary of DTE Energy Company.
